First hours on the water
Delete any playtest Saved folder, start a new game at the harbour, and do not treat the worn trawler as a shield.
The October demo is not a trailer you walk through. It is a short expedition whose real test is whether you come back with the hull still yours.

What you installed
Dream Dock put the free demo on Steam on 6 October 2026. The demo store page gives it its own quest line: a remote settlement, the islands around it, travel by boat and on foot, a local engineer, and ship work at the dry dock. The full game is still listed as coming in Q4 2026. Wishlist count on the studio's 4 September post was 400,000. That number is demand, not a promise that the demo contains the whole game.
September's open playtest (10–14 September) was a different build: Windows, English only, no NDA, and progress that would not carry. The October demo is the wider one. Twelve languages. English and Russian voice, with the other languages on localized text beside one of those two tracks. Steam Deck can run it. Dream Dock also said there is no official Steam Deck Verified rating yet.
The first gate is an old folder
If this PC already has a playtest install, the 6 October post is blunt: do not continue that save. It can crash. Their steps:
- Steam Library. Right-click DREADMOOR, then Manage, then Browse local files.
- Open the Dreadmoor folder.
- Delete the Saved folder completely.
- Launch and start a new game.
That wipe is the tutorial the menus do not print. A fresh harbour start is the supported one.
The helm tells you the job
An official store shot of the approach to a settlement shows the control language in use: a compass, a yellow distance marker in metres, and prompts labeled NITRO, LIGHTING, and LEAVE HELM. A boat-status gauge sits at the lower left. A building in that shot is signed DRY DOCK.
Leave the helm when the settlement or an island wants you on foot. The demo is built for both. LIGHTING is not decoration. Dev Diary 5 says fishing at night will not feel like fishing by day, and Dev Diary 6 says being outdoors at night makes distance less predictable. The lantern and the clock are the same decision.
Every voyage, in the July 16 announcement of this demo, begins at the harbour. The first trawler is fragile and worn. Diary 6 says that is deliberate: the boat should feel like something that already survived more than it was meant to. It gets you onto the water. It does not keep you safe if you are careless.
The harbour is not the whole map
The July 16 announcement of this demo names tools the harbour does not contain. Pick locked containers. Solve puzzles. Use the ship's radio to uncover destinations that are not on the first compass heading. Retrieve drifting cargo with the grappling hook gun. Those are land-and-water jobs, not a second game mode. A demo review in the opening days framed the whole thing as Dredge for people who also wanted to walk the character, not only steer the ship. That is a player's comparison, not the studio's pitch. What the studio did announce is the split: boat for the crossing, feet for the settlement, the engineer, and the dry dock.
Who can run it
| Tier | CPU | GPU | RAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Nvidia GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB | 8 GB |
| Recommended | Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 | Nvidia RTX 4060 or AMD Radeon RX 7600 | 16 GB |
The demo post says this build includes extra optimization and animation work on movement and interactions. One English review in the first days, from a player with a bit over an hour on the clock, said the game ran fine on their setup. Another, after about an hour, quit over the lead voice and the dialogue translation, while still praising the look and the world. Those two notes can both be true. The studio's own claim is narrower: English and Russian are the voiced tracks; the other ten languages are text.
Setup, saves, and the controls
The demo's own Steam entry lists what this build supports. Read it before you blame the game for something it never claimed.
| Listed on the demo page | What it means |
|---|---|
| Save Anytime | You do not have to reach a dock or a bed to stop playing. |
| Steam Cloud | The demo save follows the account, not one PC. |
| Full controller support, DualShock and DualSense | Gamepad is a supported path, not a workaround. |
| Steam Achievements | The demo carries its own achievement set. |
| Single-player | There is no co-op in this build. |
| Game demo | It is a slice, separate from the Q4 entry. |
Family Sharing is listed on the full game, not on the demo. Do not assume the demo can be lent out just because the main entry can.
What the first reviews actually did
English demo reviews in the opening days are mostly positive, and the playtimes are not one length. One player called the demo really short. Another posted a full playthrough after more than ten hours. A third, after about three and a half hours, wanted the fish to be scarier. Treat "how long is the demo" as a spread, not a single number.
The useful mechanical notes are specific. One review called the hook gun a way to pick up objects that are neither a caught fish nor something you can harvest in melee. That matches the grappling hook gun in the July announcement, which is how you retrieve drifting cargo. The same review said the crafting table behaves like the one in The Forest. Another, after about two and a half hours, listed cleaning barnacles off the hull next to crafting, upgrading, scavenging, and fishing as the satisfying work. Official notes name Sea-Blight polyps, not barnacles. Do not collapse those two words into one button until the demo uses one label. Both point at the same habit: the hull is a chore, not a postcard.
A slower review, about an hour and a half in, called the fishing fun and the pace slow in places, with creepy sea creatures and a survival-horror feel. Diary 5 says that slowness is the design. Early on, threats are shown in a scripted way so you know they are real. After that, tension is supposed to sit in fog, quiet water, and the gap back to the settlement, not in a fight every minute.
What this build is not
It is not the Q4 game. It is not a place to load a September playtest save. It is not a verified Steam Deck release. Bug reports go to the in-game form the 6 October post added. Console storefronts are not part of that announcement.
The rest of the loop, the two skill trees and the fuel stops, is on the trawler and fishing page. Why the water itself is the problem is on Sea Blight.
